Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to describe the levels of anxiety, depression, and distress; information needs and satisfaction with medical information; to examine the nurse–patient communication among hospitalized cancer patients at the Oncology Center, Military Hospital 103.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 inpatients with cancer from January to June 2025. Data were collected using standardized instruments, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Distress Thermometer (DT), the Four Habits Coding Scheme (4HCS) for nurse communication skills, the Patient Information Needs Questionnaire (PINQ), and the EORTC QLQ-INFO25 for satisfaction with information received.
Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression was 31.0% and 25.0%, respectively, while 66.5% of patients scored ≥ 4 on the Distress Thermometer, indicating a need for psychological support. The overall mean communication score of nurses was 4.05 ± 0.44 (on a 5-point scale), with the highest rating for “respect and empathy” (4.30 ± 0.53) and the lowest for “spending time to answer questions” (3.78 ± 0.67). Patients reported high information needs, particularly regarding treatment side effects (89.5%) and treatment methods (88.0%). The mean information satisfaction score was 57.3 ± 16.5, highest for disease-related information (61.1 ± 15.1) and lowest for care services (52.6 ± 20.0).
Conclusion: Cancer patients demonstrated high levels of psychological distress and substantial unmet information needs. Strengthening nurses’ communication and counseling skills, along with routine psychological screening, is essential to improve the quality of holistic cancer care.
