Abstract
Objectives: To assess the level of palliative care knowledge among nursing students; To explore factors associated with their knowledge.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 380 third- and fourth-year nursing students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University in 2025. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire including demographic characteristics and a 20-item palliative care knowledge scale. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and ANOVA were performed with a significance level of p < 0.05.
Results: The mean knowledge score was 9.08 ± 2.48 (out of 20). Among participants, 57.1% had poor knowledge, 41.6% had moderate knowledge, and only 1.3% had good knowledge. No statistically significant differences were found by academic year (p = 0.410) or gender (p = 0.137). Academic performance was significantly associated with knowledge level (p = 0.016), with excellent students achieving higher scores.
Conclusions: Nursing students’ knowledge of palliative care was generally insufficient and uneven. Academic performance was associated with knowledge level. Strengthening palliative care education and applying diverse teaching strategies are recommended to improve students’ competencies in this field.
