Abstract

Objective: To provide more information about the risk of phlebitis after insertion of PVC, to do the improvement of the quality of care in the hospital, we conducted this research with the objective which is identifying the level of risk and related factors of phlebitis after PVC insertion on inpatients in Viet Duc University Hospital.

Method: Longitudinal study, phlebitis was diagnosed and classified by VIP scale. Survival analysis was used to analyze the data.

Results: risk of phlebitis after PVC insertion was higher than INS’s recommendation, mean survival time for PVC without phlebitis level 2 (VIP2) was 3.9 ± 0.1 days (95% CI: 3.7 –4.1); most of PVC didn’t get phlebitis in the first 3 days, mean survival time for 75% PVC without phlebitis level 2 was 3.00 ± 0.154 days. Indepent related factors of VIP 2 were size of PVC, site of PVC insertion, time of maintaining three-way stopcock, and taking KCl.

Conclusion: Hospitals should have improved policies related to PVC phlebitis to improve the quality of care for patients. Hospitals need to promulgate regulations and guidelines for optimal use of PVC, suitable to the hospital's context and resources. In addition, the dissemination and measurement of the risk of PVC related phlebitis is also an indicator to evaluate hospital quality
