Abstract

Objective: To describe the situation and complications of blood transfusions at Haiphong Children’s Hospital.

Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study including825 patients with 2,309 blood transfusions.

Results: There were 5 types of blood products transmitted, using red blood cells had the highest percentage with 73.72% (227,260ml); there was no case of whole blood transfusion. All blood products were Rh(+). Patients with blood type O had the highest number (348/825).Thalassemia was the leading cause of blood transfusions with a total of 145.370 ml of blood products (47.15%). The rate of early complications was 2.25% (52/2,309), as follows: fever 59.62% (31/52). allergies 38.46% (20/52), shock 1.92% (1/52). Complications occured in red blood cell, fresh frozen plasma, and platelet transfusions. The age group of 6 to 10 years had the highest number of transfusion complication cases (21/52). There was no difference in complications between male and female. Patients receiving blood transfusions more than twice had the higher rate of blood transfusion complications (44/52).

Conclusion: Red blood cells were the most used product. All transfused blood products were Rh (+). Patients with O blood group were the most common. Thalassemia was the leading cause of blood transfusions. The age group from 6 to 10 years old had the highest number of complication cases. Fever was the most common reaction. Complications occured in red blood cell, fresh frozen plasma, and platelet transfusions. Blood transfusion complications occur more often in patients receiving blood transfusions before.
