Abstract
Objective: To survey the level of independence in daily activities and identify some related factors of patients after stroke.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 217 stroke patients at the Stroke Department, Da Nang Hospital from October 2022 to April 2023. The research toolkit evaluates the level of independence in daily activities with 10 indicators according to the Barthel - BI scale.
Results: The majority of patients after stroke need care support with the average Barthel score being quite low (37.6267 ± 35.03984), and 62.7% of patients are completely dependent on daily activities, of which for 10 daily activities, the care needed for bathing accounts for the highest percentage (74.2%) and the lowestrate for bowel control (32.3%). Factors that are statistically significantly related (p < 0.05) to the level of independence in daily activities of patients after a stroke include: Age, place of residence, education level, occupation occupation, primary care participant, smoking status, alcohol use habits, and comorbidities.
Conclusion: The level of independence in daily activities of patients after stroke was quite low, however, some patients after stroke could still be completely independent or only partially dependent. Therefore, care plans need to be developed appropriately for each specific patient.
