Abstract

Objective: Research on the dynamics of improving English proficiency and related factors of Vietnamese nurses.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on clinical nurses, midwives and medical technicians through a convenience sampling method. The motivation toward English learning of participants was measured by the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS).

Results: The MWMS’s mean score of 489 nurses, midwives, and medical technicians was 86.20 ± 17.51, with 64.7% of participants having moderate motivation. No statistically significant association was found between the personal characteristics of nurses, midwives and medical technicians and their motivation to learn English.

Conclusions: The majority of nurses, midwives, and medical technicians in Vietnam have moderate motivation toward improving English proficiency, reflecting the need for more support and encouragement to boost their motivation in the process of improving their foreign language skills. Thereby, it may be helpful to improve care providers’ English proficiency, meeting the requirements of international integration in health care.
