Abstract

Objective: To assess nurses’ practices in central venous catheter (CVC) care and to identify associated factors in the intensive care units of Da Nang Hospital in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 114 nurses working in the intensive care units of Da Nang Hospital from February to July 2025. Nurses’ CVC care practices were assessed using a 14-item observational checklist that was developed based on the regulations of Da Nang Hospital and circulars issued by the Ministry of Health.

Results: Overall, 69.32% of nurses met the required standards for CVC care practice, with a mean practice score of 62.68 ± 8.37. Univariate analysis showed that work experience, training on CVC care, and managerial support were significantly associated with practice (p < 0.05). In the multivariable logistic regression model, nurses with under 5 years of experience had a 9.97-fold higher likelihood of inadequate practice compared with those with more than 5 years of experience (OR = 9.97; 95% CI: 2.85–34.85; p < 0.001). Nurses who had not received training were more likely to demonstrate inadequate practice than those who had received training (OR = 0.12; 95% CI: 0.02–0.68; p = 0.017).

Conclusion: Nurses’ practices in CVC care were at a moderate level but remained inconsistent. Work experience and training were independently associated with practice, highlighting the need for enhanced training programs and strengthened practice supervision, particularly for less experienced nurses, to improve the quality of care and prevent catheter-related infections.
