Abstract
Objective: To describe clinical nursing practice competence and identify factors associated with practice competence among fourth-year nursing students at Dai Nam University in 2025.
Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods design, combining a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive approach with qualitative research. Quantitative data were collected from 53 full-time fourth-year nursing students using a convenience sampling method (total population sampling). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27 with descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests. The qualitative component consisted of two focus group discussions and was analyzed using thematic analysis to further explain and complement the quantitative findings.
Results: The findings indicated that the overall clinical practice competence of nursing students was at a fairly good level, with a mean score of 53.58 ± 13.56, ranging from 13 to 73. Technical competencies such as medication administration (9.19/12 ± 3.02) and nursing care techniques (9.04/12 ± 2.05) achieved the highest scores, while communication and teamwork had the lowest scores (4.26/6 ± 1.70). Quantitative analysis showed that female students were more likely to achieve higher clinical competence than male students (OR = 7.25; p = 0.006). Additionally, spending more than 2 hours per day on self-study significantly increased the likelihood of achieving higher competence (OR = 12.65; p = 0.02). Qualitative findings further identified additional related factors, including health status, learning attitude, the gap between theory and practice, limitations in clinical supervision, pressure from the clinical learning environment, and inadequate facilities.
Conclusion: The clinical practice competence of nursing students at Dai Nam University is at a fairly good level. Associated factors include gender, self-study time, health status, and the clinical learning environment. Comprehensive strategies such as strengthening clinical supervision, developing simulation-based training models, and promoting self-directed learning are recommended to enhance clinical competence in alignment with the Vietnamese Nursing Competency Standards.
