Abstract
Objective: To describe the reality andto assess the changes in the knowledge of compliance with hypertension treatment among the elderly patients before and after the educational intervention.
Method: The one group pre-test and post-test educational intervention was conducted among 110 elderly outpatients with hypertension in Bac Ninh General Hospital from January to April 2018.
Result: Before the intervention, the elderly patients’ knowledge of hypertension and compliance with treatment was limited with the mean score of only 4.88 ± 1.75 points of the total 10 points. The knowledge then improved considerablely with the mean score went up to 9.34 ± 1.03 points immediate after the intervention and remained at 9.04 ± 1.39 points four weeks after the intervention(p values of 0.05). The percentages of elderly patients with standardized knowledge of compliance with hypertention treatment beforethe intervention, immediate after, and four weeks later the intervention were 53.6%, 100%, 99.1%, respectively.
Conclusion: The elderly patients’ knowledge of compliance with hypertension treatment was limited. However, the improvement was considerably seen after the intervention. This result also revealed the importance and the need of regular health education to enhance and reinforce the compliance with hypertension treatment among the older patients.
