Abstract
Objectives: To describe the anxiety prevalence of clients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy with anesthesia and investigate associated factors related to the anxiety status.
Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 76 clients who indicated for gastrointestinal endoscopy with anesthesia from April to July 2025 at the Department of General Medicine and Outpatient Clinic, Vinmec Smart City International General Hospital. Anxiety levels were assessed using the STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) scale. Descriptive analysis, Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests, and Spearman’s rho correlation were used to analyze the research data.
Results: Most clients were under 60 years old (77.6%), with a higher proportion of females (57.9%). 51.3% of clients had previously undergone gastrointestinal endoscopy. The most common reasons for anxiety about endoscopy were: post-endoscopy diet (78.9%), time to return to work and normal daily activities (73.7%) and possible complications related to the endoscopy procedure (68.4%). Factors reducing anxiety included: familiarity with medical examinations (60.5%) and prior endoscopy (57.9%). The average STAI-S score (state anxiety) was 39.4 ± 8.2, and STAI-T score (trait anxiety) was 35.1 ± 5.1. Anxiety at moderate level or higher measured by STAI-S accounted for the majority (52.6%). On the STAI-T scale, high anxiety was only 3.9%, while little or no anxiety made up the majority (72.4%). Significant factors related to anxiety (p < 0.05) included: previous gastrointestinal endoscopy, family members with gastrointestinal diseases and number of gastrointestinal symptoms experienced.
Conclusion: Anxiety before undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy with anesthesia exists and is notable. Major concerns relate to post-endoscopy diet, time to resume normal work and daily life, and potential complications during the procedure. Factors associated with increased anxiety include prior history of endoscopy, family history of gastrointestinal disease, and the number of gastrointestinal symptoms the clients has.
