Abstract
Objective: To analyze factors associated with the nurisng care outcomes of children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea who were hospitalized at the Hoe Nhai General Hospital in 2025.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 129 mothers and 129 children under 5 years old diagnosed with acute diarrhea and admitted to Hoe Nhai General Hospital. The study utilized a data collection tool consisting of two parts: Part 1 included clinical and subclinical characteristics of the children with acute diarrhea obtained from medical records; Part 2 comprised a questionnaire administered to mothers to assess nurses’ caregiving activities. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, employing descriptive frequency tables and the Chi-square test to examine the association between various factors and nursing care outcomes.
Results: The proportion of care outcomes meeting expectations was 69.8%, while 30.2% did not meet expectations. There was a statistically significant association between the care outcomes of children with acute diarrhea and several factors, including stool characteristics, dehydration status, nutritional condition, comorbidities, and electrolyte disturbances.
Conclusion: The hospital and nursing department should strengthen training programs to improve the effectiveness of pediatric nursing care. During the care process for children with acute diarrhea, special attention should be paid to those with severe dehydration, irritability or lethargy, malnutrition, comorbid conditions, and signs of electrolyte imbalance.
