Abstract
Objectives: To describe the current status of inpatient nursing care task performance at Quan Son General Hospital in 2025.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on all 50 nurses directly involved in patient care at five clinical departments with inpatient beds. Data collection instruments included a direct observation checklist (200 observations) and indirect observation through medical records (200 charts), developed based on 9 out of 12 professional duties stipulated in Circular No. 31/2021/TT-BYT. Each sub-item was evaluated using a five-point rating scale, with completion defined as a mean score greater than 3.5 out of 5.0.
Results: The completion rates of nursing care activities ranged from 65.9% for health education counseling to 96.0% for the care of patients undergoing surgery/procedures. The two tasks with the lowest completion rates were health education counseling (65.9%) and medication administration/monitoring (68.0%). The nurse-to-occupied-bed ratio was only 0.46, compared with the standard ratio of 1.0–1.2 nurses per bed. Outside regular working hours, 100% of nurses were responsible for caring for more than 20 patients per shift.
Conclusion: Most nursing care activities were performed at an acceptable level; however, substantial limitations remained in health education counseling and medication monitoring. Severe nursing workforce shortages were identified as the key barrier affecting the quality of comprehensive patient care. Hospitals should prioritize increasing nursing staffing levels, developing specialized health education materials, and continuously monitoring compliance with care protocols outside regular working hours.
