Abstract
Objective: To describe the occurrence of nausea and vomiting and care outcomes among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital in 2025.
Subjects and methods: A longitudinal study was conducted among 120 cancer patients aged 18 years or older who were indicated for chemotherapy at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital from January to June 2025. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0.
Results: The study showed that 46.7% of patients experienced vomiting and 100.0% experienced nausea 1 hour after chemotherapy. After 24 hours, the proportion of patients who continued to experience vomiting decreased to 6.7%, while 69.2% continued to experience nausea. Regarding nursing care, 100% of patients were assessed for nausea and vomiting and received explanations about their causes; 99.2% were instructed on measures to alleviate symptoms and received support when reporting nausea or vomiting; and 99.2% received antiemetic medication. Following care, 99.2% of patients reported improvement in nausea, and 96.7% reported improvement in fatigue.
Conclusion: Nausea and vomiting occurred frequently during the early period following chemotherapy, particularly nausea. After 24 hours, both the proportion of patients experiencing vomiting and the severity of nausea decreased compared with the 1-hour assessment. Monitoring, education, and supportive care were provided at high rates, and most patients reported improvements in nausea and fatigue following care. However, dehydration, nutritional status, and sleep disturbances remain important issues requiring continued attention in the care of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
