Abstract
Objective: To describe the status of mothers’ awareness on caring for children under 5 years old with pneumonia in the Pediatrics Department in Quang Ninh provincial general hospital in 2017.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from October 2016 to September 2017 on 62 mothers who directly take care of children under 5 years old diagnosed with pneumonia in the Pediatrics Department in Quang Ninh provincial general hospital. The subjects were interviewed directly using a pre-designed questionnaire consisting of 7 questions, each question had 6 choices, the maximum correct idea was 25.
Results: The percentage of mothers with proper awareness of pneumonia knowledge contents: proper awareness of definition: 54.8%, proper awareness of the cause: 53.2%; 90.3% of the mothers have correct perception of symptoms, 75.8% of the mothers have proper awareness of risk factors; 51.6% of the mothers fully aware of the ; 100% of the mothers know how to take care of children when they have pneumonia; The percentage of mothers having the proper awareness of preventive measures is 67.7%.
Conclusion: Over 30 year old mothers have a higher awareness of the disease than mothers under 30. Mothers with undergraduate, graduate education have higher awareness than mothers with lower education. White – collar mothers are more aware of the disease than housewives.
