Abstract
Objective: To describe the current state of self-care knowledge among outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at Nam Dinh General Hospital in 2025.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used on 90 outpatient COPD patients from March to June 2025. The research methodology was developed based on Bui Van Cuong’s Master’s thesis “Changing Self-Care Knowledge in COPD Patients at the Respiratory Department of Quang Ninh Provincial General Hospital” and additional references from available and reliable sources. The study consisted of 36 questions, including 9 questions on general patient information and 27 questions assessing self-care knowledge (medication, nutrition, respiratory rehabilitation, exacerbation prevention, smoking/alcohol cessation). Data were processed using SPSS 25.0 with descriptive statistics.
Results: The average age of patients was 66.7 ± 9.2; males accounted for 76.7%. Self-care knowledge was limited with an average score of 5.5 ± 3.9/27 points; the percentage of patients with knowledge in various areas was low: general knowledge 22.4%, medication adherence 33.9%, nutrition 45.2%, rehabilitation exercises 17.6%, and smoking cessation/alcohol restriction 28.9%.
Conclusion: Self-care knowledge among outpatient COPD patients in Nam Dinh is limited, especially regarding nutrition and respiratory rehabilitation. Health education needs to be strengthened, focusing on the elderly and those with lower educational levels.
