Abstract
Objective: To describe some factors related to underweight malnutrition in Thalassemia patients in Hai Phong Children’s Hospital.
Method: Descriptive studies was conducted on 61 Thalassemia patients at Hai Phong Children’s Hospital.
Results: The rate of underweight malnutrition of Thalassemia patients is 37,7%, in that the first degree malnutrition rate is 29,5%, the second and third degree malnutrition are 6,6% and 1,6%, respectively. The risk of underweight malnutrition of Beta Thalassemia patients is 8,96 times higher than Alpha Thalassemia patients, of the duration of disease >50 months is 5,01 times higher than ≤50 months, of Thalassemia patients who have blood transfusions is 10,05 times higher than patients without blood transfusion.
Conclusion: The prevalence of underweight malnutrition in Thalassemia patients is still quite high (37,7%), of which the 1st degree malnutrition rate is the main. Some factors that increase the risk of underweight malnutrition are Beta Thalassemia, the length of the duration of disease, have blood transfusions.
