Abstract
Objective: To describe the current status of knowledge, attitude, and practice of the Kangaroo method of mothers with premature babies at the Department of Neonatology, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in 2021.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 108 mothers who were taking care of their premature babies by the Kangaroo method at the Department of Neonatology, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from August 2020 to September 2021. Knowledge, attitude, and practice of the Kangaroo method of mothers were assessed with the criteria of Pass or Failed. Collected data were processed using SPSS 20.0 software.
Results: 100% of mothers had knowledge of baby care by Kangaroo method, 88.8% had positive attitude about taking care of children by Kangaroo method, 78.8 % of mothers pass steps of taking care of a child by the Kangaroo method. Among 12 child care steps, two steps had a relatively low level of pass, including step 5 and step 12 with the pass rate were 40.7 and 32.4%, respectively.
Conclusion: All mothers in the study have good knowledge, and most of them have positive attitude and good practice of taking care of premature children by Kangaroo method. There are 2 out of 12 steps of taking care of children by Kangaroo method with low success rate, including one step that may influence on the quality of child care, so it is important to pay attention to instructions and Monitor mothers when using this method to improve the quality of care for premature babies.
