Abstract
Objective: To describe the nutritional status and quality of life of outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Hung Yen General Hospital in 2026.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 277 outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), while quality of life was evaluated using the Vietnamese version of the Asian Diabetes Quality of Life (AsianDQOL) questionnaire.
Results: Overall, 65.7% of participants had a normal BMI, 30.7% were overweight or obese, and 3.6% were undernourished. Based on WHR classification, 39.4% of participants were in the minimal risk category, 31.0% in the low-risk category, 25.6% in the moderate-risk category, and 4.0% in the high-risk category. The overall quality of life score was 3.02 ± 0.45 (on a 5-point scale). Most participants had a fair quality of life (75.8%), while 18.8% reported a good quality of life. Among the five domains, mental health achieved the highest score, whereas personal relationships had the lowest score.
Conclusion: Outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Hung Yen General Hospital generally had a relatively good nutritional status and a fair quality of life. However, strengthening nutritional management and providing comprehensive supportive interventions are needed to improve the domains of quality of life that remain adversely affected, particularly personal relationships.
