Abstract
Objective: To describe the current status of postoperative care for children with inguinal hernia by nurses at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed, involving 30 nurses participating in the postoperative care of children with inguinal hernia. The study involved observing procedures such as intravenous injections, medication administration, and wound dressing and cleaning. Each nurse was observed performing three procedures, each procedure being observed three times. The total number of observations for one procedure was 30 nurses x 3 observations/nurse = 90 observations. The total number of observations for the entire study was 90 observations x 3 procedures = 270 observations. Nurses were evaluated on whether they performed each procedure in accordance with the sequential steps outlined in the technical guidelines.
Results: Only 3 out of 10 steps in the observed procedures met the required standards. For the remaining steps, the compliance rates ranged from 88.9% to 96.7%. The proportion of fully observed steps in the wound dressing and cleaning procedures for pediatric patients was 31.3%. The proportion of fully observed steps in the intravenous injection procedure was 50%. The compliance rates for the observed procedures intravenous injection, medication administration, and wound dressing and cleaning were 96.1%, 95.8%, and 96.6%, respectively. Conclusion: The nurses in the study generally performed the patient care procedures well. However, caution is still necessary during the implementation process as pediatric care involves various risks that can affect care outcomes.
