Abstract
Objective: To assess the reality of, and changes in foot self-care knowledge and practices among outpatients with type2 diabetic mellitus before and after the educational intervention.
Method: One group pre-test and post-test educational intervention was conducted among 100 outpatients with type 2 diabetic mellitus in Tuyen Quang General Hospital from January 2018 to March2018.
Result: The mean scores of foot self-care knowledge went significantly up to17.97 ± 1.72 points of the total 20 points immediately at the time after the intervention and remained at a high level of 16.48 ± 2.82 points one month afterwards compared with 12.57 ± 3.75 points before the intervention (p<0.001). The percentage of patients with well-informed knowledge also increased dramatically, reaching 98% immediately after the intervention and remained at 81% at the time of one month latter versus 42% at the time of intervention. The mean score of foot self-care practice also increased considerablly up to 18.11 ± 3.00 points of the total 21 points at the time of one month after the intervention in comparision with 12.71 ± 3.62 before the intervention (p<0.001). In particular, the percentage of well-practiced patients before the intervention was 33% that went up to77% after one month of the intervention.
Conclusion: The educational intervention in the study has significantly improved the foot self-care knowledge and practice of participations. The research shows that the importance of health counseling and education for people with type 2 diabetes and should be taken regularly.
