Abstract
Objective: To describe the status of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to glaucoma eye self-care among patients aged 40 years and older attending Hanoi Eye Hospital in 2024, and to identify associated factors.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 376 patients aged 40 years and older attending the outpatient department of Hanoi Eye Hospital, Nguyen Viet Xuan campus, from March to July 2024. Convenience sampling was applied. Face-to-face interviews were performed using a structured questionnaire covering demographic characteristics, glaucoma-related information, eye-care service utilization, knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Good knowledge was defined as ≥21/28 points, good attitude as ≥ 45 points, and good practice as ≥ 14 points. Data were entered using EpiData 3.1 and analyzed with SPSS 22.0 using descriptive statistics, chi-square/Fisher’s exact tests, and multivariable logistic regression.
Results: The mean age was 64.24 ± 10.55 years; 55.6% were female; and 18.9% had been diagnosed with glaucoma. Only 33.2% had ever heard of glaucoma and 12.2% had specifically received glaucoma-related communication. The proportions of good knowledge, good attitude, and good practice were 13.6%, 69.9%, and 3.5%, respectively. Key gaps included awareness of glaucoma heredity (34.8%), awareness of ocular complications from corticosteroid misuse (7.7%), hand washing before eye-drop instillation (46.5%), and checking medications before purchase (27.4%). Multivariable analysis showed that participants without a glaucoma diagnosis were more likely to have poor knowledge (OR = 3.74; 95%CI: 1.74–8.04). Good attitude was associated with higher educational attainment, being a worker, and good knowledge, whereas lack of eye-health communication reduced the likelihood of good attitude. Good practice declined with age and was less common among those without a glaucoma diagnosis.
Conclusion: Although attitudes toward glaucoma were relatively positive, knowledge and especially eye self-care practices remained limited. Nurse-led health education, standardized counseling on eye-drop instillation, and targeted communication for older adults, less educated patients, and those not yet diagnosed with glaucoma are needed.
