Abstract
Objective: We sought to examine gout patients’ knowledge about diet and lifestyle at Nam Dinh general hospital and evaluate the changing in patients’ knowledge regarding lifestyle and diet after conducting an educational intervention.
Method: A diet and lifestyle questionnaire was used to determine gout patients’ knowledge about which foods and lifestyles are good for them. An educational program regarding standard foods and lifestyles for gout patients was conducted. Patients’ knowledge about diet and lifestyle was evaluated second time by the same questionnaire.
Result: Before our educational program, patients’ knowledge about diet and lifestyle are poor. Only a minority of patients were aware of common foods known to trigger gout and lifestyles that are beneficial for goutewith the medium score of 7,31 ± 1,68 on 18 questions. After our educational program, patients’ knowledge regarding diet and lifestyle for gout has increased significantly, 100% patients have knowledge about lifestyle and diet for Gout patients with the medium score of 15,52 ± 1,3 on 18 questions.
Conclusion: Knowledge deficits about dietary triggers and healthy lifestyles were common in gout patients at Nam Dinh general hospital.
