Abstract
Objectives: Describe the current situation of postpartum depression through screening according to the EPDS scale and some related factors in women with children under 1 year old in 2 wards of Ngo Quyen district, Hai Phong in 2023.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 206 mothers with children under 1 year old from October 2022 to July 2023 in Dong Khe and Dang Giang wards, Ngo Quyen district, Hai Phong. The study used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to screen for postpartum depression.
Results: The rate of postpartum depression among mothers in the study was 20.4%. Mothers under 25 years old have a higher rate of depression than mothers aged 25 years and older (35.9% vs 16.8%); Mothers with 1 to 2 children have a higher rate of postpartum depression than mothers with more than 2 children (27.2% vs 3.4%); Mothers with a birth interval of less than 3 years had a higher rate of depression than other mothers (28.8% vs 11.8%), the relationship was statistically significant. Mothers who worried frequently during pregnancy had a higher rate of postpartum depression, 41.9% vs 11.1%.
Conclusion: Postpartum depression among women with children under 1 year old in Hai Phong city is still high. The study determined that there was a statistically significant relationship between age, number of children, birth interval and anxiety during pregnancy with the mother’s level of postpartum depression.
