Abstract

Objective: Assessment of changes in nutritional knowledge after health education intervention among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic viral hepatitis at the Department of Infectious Diseases, National Hospital of Endocrinology in 2025.

Study design: A pre–post intervention study was conducted on 90 inpatients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and chronic hepatitis B, who were receiving treatment at the Department of Infectious Diseases, National Hospital of Endocrinology, from February 2025 to June 2025.

Results: The mean age of participants was 65.8 ± 13.3 years; those aged ≥ 70 years accounted for 44.4%, and those aged 60–69 years accounted for 30%. Males made up 54.4% of the sample, and females 45.6%. The average duration of T2DM was 8.6 ± 4.8 years, with 32.2% having diabetes for 1–5 years, 42.2% for 5–10 years, and 25.6% for 10–20 years. Before the intervention, only 32.2% of patients had good nutritional knowledge (≥ 50%), while 67.8% had inadequate knowledge (< 50%). After the health education intervention, the proportion of patients with good knowledge increased to 82.2%, whereas those with inadequate knowledge decreased to 17.8%.

Conclusion: The study revealed that most patients with T2DM and chronic hepatitis were elderly, predominantly male, and had been living with diabetes for 5–10 years on average. Prior to the intervention, their nutritional knowledge was limited but improved significantly following the nutritional education program, demonstrating the effectiveness of the intervention in enhancing knowledge and disease management for comorbid conditions.
