Abstract

Objectives: To describe the current status of knowledge and treatment adherence among mothers of children with Helicobacter pylori–related peptic ulcer disease and to identify associated factors.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 158 mothers whose children were diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori–related peptic ulcer disease at Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 26.0, employing descriptive statistics, Chi-square/Fisher’s exact tests, t-test or Mann–Whitney test, and binary logistic regression. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results: The proportion of mothers adhering to medication use was 94.9%, adherence to non-pharmacological measures was 98.7%, and overall treatment adherence was 74.1%. Good maternal knowledge was significantly associated with treatment adherence (OR = 3.05; 95% CI: 1.09–8.81). Counseling provided by healthcare workers was also associated with medication adherence (OR = 2.23) and adherence to non-pharmacological measures (OR = 2.56). Age, occupation, educational level, and place of residence were not significantly associated with treatment adherence.

Conclusions: Treatment adherence among mothers was relatively high, although knowledge remained inconsistent; maternal knowledge and healthcare worker counseling were significantly associated with treatment adherence.
