Abstract

Objective: To describe the actual knowledge of treatment adherence of outpatients with type 2 diabetes managed by the Son La endocrine hospital in 2019 and to assess the changes of knowledge of treatment adherence after a health educational intervention.

Method: One group pretest and posttest health educational intervention was conducted among 100 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, being treated in the Outpatient Department of Son La Endocrine Hospital from 25/02/2019 to 25/06/2019.

Results: At the begining the mean score of the patients’ knowledge of treatment adherence was limited at 20.58 ± 5.6 points of the total 36 points of scale. But it was improved significantly, reached 30.47 ± 3.63 points after completing the intervention one month and maintained at 29.68 ± 3.91 points at three months later (p. < 0,001). The proportion of patients with a standard knowledge increased from 64% to 98% after the intervention one month and maintained with 97% at three months later.

Conclusion: The knowledge of treatment adherence in type 2 diabetes mellitus was limited before the educational intervention and improved significantly after the intervention. The results of this study showed clearly effectiveness of the health educational program therefore that should be conducted regularly in healthcare services.
